The world building has been an eye opener. So far, it looks like I’m going to be re-outlining Born of Silence from scratch. A lot of the scenes will remain the same, but there are going to be sooooooo many changes . . .
Worked my second day shift in forever yesterday. It was slow and boring, but I got over 600 words during my lunch break. Today I put in another 1009. And I’ve only considered the Europeans, the American Indians, and the street kids. I’ve still got at least four more governments to come to terms with that will cause ripples and eddies in what individuals will do and say.
Been enjoying my ‘vacation.’ Finished the Smallville DVDs, read several books, and am starting to get antsy again.
I’m going to do some monster world building on the Sanguire rather than edit the first book. I know that once I’m finished answering all my questions about the political structures and ramifications, I’ll be sick of it again. I’ll set it aside, cover it with a towel, and allow it to rise before baking. After that, I plan on writing on another book, Orphan Maker.
It’s Monday. Which means it’s time to post chapters five and six of the Iditarod story. Enjoy!
Darth Vader, I mean. The flick was a bit long but trying to cram so much into it had a lot to do with it, I’m sure. It was so cool to hear Luke’s and Leah’s theme songs again, too. All my questions from the 70’s and 80’s were answered – what would create Vader, what woman would have his childred, and how the hel did he turn into a little old grandfather at the end of chapter 6? Makes me want to run out and buy the DVDs.
The wife, however, is not a fan geek. Ah, well. Fortunately for me, my best friend is watching the movie as I type. I’ll hit her up in chat to blither and squee about it.
I’ve been doing not much of anything. I’m on the fourth DVD of Smallville season three that I borrowed from a friend at work. Wow! There’s so much I missed while working nights! I rented the first season from Netflix but haven’t gotten to the second one, yet. I’ll have to bring those DVDs higher up in my queue.
I’ve been toying with editing the first Sanguire book, but I don’t think I’m getting anywhere. The political scene is still a bit of a mish mash to me (I’m pretty apolitical as a rule.) While I do have a basic understanding of the European Sanguire political system, I have to take into consideration the other countries/peoples. If the Sanguire evolved as did Humans, then they’ve been around as long and have just as convoluted a history. The South and Latin Americas would have their own governing system, as would the Asians, the Africans, and the indigenous people of all continents.
The problem lies not in what type of system this different areas would employ but how they have interacted over the hundreds of thousands of years to the present. American Indians, for instance, would already have had Sanguire in their midst when the European Human came over and began to conquer. Would the European Sanguire involved have taken a Eurcentric view of the ‘savages’ or would they have some sort of affinity for their ‘brothers’? I’ve blithely written the tale of Jenna moving the Euro Sanguire to Portland, Oregon . . . what the hel to the native Sanguire feel about that? Does that leave a power vacuum in Europe?
And why would she bring them over here once she realizes there’s a whole different set of cultural issues in the States? Yeah, the prophecy puts her as, if you’ll excuse the paraphrasing, one ruler to rule them all and one ruler to bind them. But that’s a European prophecy. I don’t know, but I’d think the Indians and the ‘Colonials’ might have other ideas.
Which puts a whole ‘nother spin on the book.
I guess I need to spend more time on the Sanguire closer to home.
Final on my list of things to post, chapters three and four of the Iditarod story. Enjoy!
At least a little. Finally finished a Slow Movin’ short that’s been on the back burner for awhile – Birthday Gifts.
Don’t Read at Work!
Doing a little housekeeping, changing some formats, adding a short or two I’ve forgotten to throw online . . .
Dancing was a story I wrote for the At First Blush anthology. Since Fortitude Press folded and I’ve regained the rights to this tale, I thought I’d finally post it for your reading. Don’t read at work! (As if that needs to be said . . .)
Also, in February I wrote another Slow Movin’ short for the Academy. It’s entitled Need a Lift? and is in reality eighth in a series. I went through my Slow Movin’ file and updated all the stories with links to the others in the series to make it easier to navigate.
Finally, I’ve decided to post the Iditaord story online. Initially, I planned on not posting any more novel length stories online in an effort to further my goal of publication in the larger field of SF or fantasy. But the truth of the matter is, if I ever break into those fields, I’ll probably have to use a pen name anyway. Why hold the lesbian romances back from my fans when you all buy the hard copy versions anyway? Seems like cutting off my nose to spite my face.
So, those lesbian romance novels I write will be posted online. The Sanguire will not, as my ultimate goal with that is to break into the larger publishing houses. You’ve all been so patient with me, not complaining about my decision, and it’s been a good three years since I finished On Azrael’s Wings and posted it, you deserve to see what I’ve been writing the last year!
Home again. Jiggity jig.
Had a nice weekend, though I never caught Zero. We weren’t attending the con and didn’t have rooms at the con hotel, which made seeing anybody a bit difficult. What with the convention schedule and Lucy’s show schedule, hooking up with friends was a logistical nightmare.
Still, got to hang with some friends for a few hours on Friday and Saturday night. Plus the wife and I did the tourist thing on Saturday – double decker bus tour, Space Needle, and the Seattle Underground Tour. While I would have liked more time with my friends, there’s still Orlando Bardcon. We’ll be there for a few days to enjoy DisneyWorld and have a better chance at visiting.
It’s good to be home, though. The cats weren’t too upset with us for deserting them. We must have been gone just long enough for them to get over their mad. LOL! If it had only been an overnight trip, I know they still wouldn’t be talking to us.
We leave in the morning. Not giving Cremation my money, but I’m thinking about hanging in the con hotel bar on Friday evening. (I’ve got to find Zero to give her Aries’ books!)
Saturday night we see Lucy Lawless in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes with friends. That’ll be a hoot!
Then home again on Sunday afternoon.
Getting to that state of actually being bored (which is a good thing according to my readers.)
From National Geographic comes this link – can anyone say ‘replicators’? Where’s Jack O’Neill when you need him?
And here’s an article on Tutenkamen’s facial reconstruction. For a change, it actually does look real. I’ve seen the reconstruction of his father (a very ugly man) and Daddy’s small chin is echoed here.
Heard No Sugar Tonight by The Guess Who on the radio yesterday which brought back some good feelings. Now I’m researching iTunes to find more . . .
Headed out early this morning to the post office. Everybody who has paid should expect their books soon. I still have three that are reserved but haven’t heard from their future owners. (Plus the one that I know will be sending payment next week.)
Met today. Had a wonderful chat about books, covers, and writing in general. I’m glad to have finally met her (even though she doesn’t look like a techno geek to me.) We discussed my future endeavors . . . CyberEpic came up in conversation. A lot . . . LOL!
On the way home, I picked up a CD - We Are Not Alone by Breaking Benjamin – and two books. Across the Nightingale Floor by Lian Hearn and If Angels Burn by Lynn Viehl. The first is a Japanese historical based fantasy and the second a paranormal romance. Anybody who’s read Stardoc will understand why I picked it up . . . they’re by the same author.
Now I’m writing my words for the day. Only got about four hundred in at Coffee People before showed up. If I’m fortunate, I’ll finish the chapter today. If not, then it won’t be finished until Tuesday.
Gods, I’ve got to get through this book!
Lainey has passed the finish line! Scotch is swinging her around by the sled! Now they can go have some nookie and discuss their future plans.
Sheesh!
One more chapter (a really hot and bothered one,) and an epilogue, folks. Then this baby’s in the bag!
There are NO MORE COPIES of Tiopa Ki Lakota or Castle Walls
FOUR copies remain of Warlord Metal for those intrepid souls still out there…
And Lainey’s hit the finish line! W00t!
Had an indecisive moment as I considered who’s POV to use for her arrival in Nome. Hers or Scotch’s? While it was nice to consider Scotch’s POV (not to mention refreshing since the last two hundred chapters have been all from Lainey’s POV,) it was suggested to me by a friend that I should stick with Lainey a little longer. Then I can compare it to her first Iditarod the previous year as she stood on the sidelines, shivering and wondering about all these crazy people out in the Alaskan wilderness in the dead of winter.
Now that she’s there, the second half of the chapter will be Scotch’s POV - getting Lainey to the dog lot and into a shower. And into BED!
Work schedule’s screwed up a bit from what I was hoping for. Morning shift followed by two noon shifts. That cuts into my writing time considerably. Which means I have to finish this baby by Friday evening if I’m going to finish it by the time we leave for Seattle next week.
Speaking of which, while I’m not attending the Cremation con in Seattle, I will be there. Attending Lucy’s show on Saturday night and may hang out in the con hotel bar at some point.
The sale goes on . . . only five or six copies left of Warlord Metal and Castle Walls. Thanks to everyone who’s already purchased one. I’m heading for the post office on Friday.
Complete!
Cheeee-rist, will this book never end?? I had hoped to have Lainey at the finish line by now, but instead she’s eighteen miles from Nome at the Safety checkpoint.
Sheesh!
Again, I predict two more chapters and an epilogue. (I’ve said that the last three chapters, I think . . .)
Castle Walls and Warlord Metal are still available for sale! Contact me through my website for details!
Just to let you all know, I have no more copies of Tiopa Ki Lakota!
There are still 9 copies of Warlord Metal and 7 of Castle Walls at $10 each.
